WHERE TO FIND REST
At some point, I decided not to receive any more complaints or resolve any more issues between them, and so I began to refuse to settle their differences whenever they came to me.
A few days ago, I came across Matthew 11:28, and this time, the verse struck me differently. It says, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Jesus starts this verse with a warm invitation, one contrary to the attitude I had set up against my brothers. While I had sent them away, Jesus extended a hand.
Further into the verse, I find out that Jesus doesn’t extend His invitation to those who have it going great for them; He extends it to those who are pressed down and burdened, longing for relief. In our world today, a lot of people don’t want to be associated with those who have problems or burdens. And as much as I wouldn’t trade my brothers for the world, I didn’t want to be part of whatever fight or argument they were having. But Jesus tells us here that He wants to be a part of whatever it is that we’re going through.
The best part of this verse is Jesus’ promise of rest. There’s this really good feeling that comes with knowing that the person you’re bringing your problems to has a solution.
It is wonderful to note that Jesus extends this invitation and promise to "all" that are in this condition! Not only was He saying, "Come unto me... and I will give you rest" over two thousand years ago, but He’s saying it to us even right now.
I have had my fair share of settling my siblings’ fights, and I had to make them understand that I couldn’t settle "all" of their fights or resolve "all" of their issues. But here we have Jesus, assuring as many who labor and are heavy laden that there’s room to come to Him.
And I think... it’s about time we took Him up on His offer.
