BIG DREAMS, LAZY KID

Do you ever see something that fuels your desire to do more or to become successful? Like someone that became successful at about the same age you are? Or a speech that flooded your entire being with a lot of motivation?

At the end of the day, you’re lying flat on your bed, thinking of all the ways you can do better. Finally, you come up with a long-term plan and conclude that you should be able to pull it off. You rush over to your journal and scribble furiously; you can feel the grin of satisfaction working its way up your face.

Looks simple, but it’ll require a lot of time and energy, three hours of work a day, building your brand, reading books, asking questions, attending trainings, getting mentored by someone excelling in your field. Luckily, it’s holiday time, you’d be able to pull it off.

You take a look at your plan and go to bed with a huge smile on your face, grateful that you’re putting your life together.

You’re awake the next morning by four, passion burning in your eyes, self-confidence saturating your entire room. Your plans have been broken down into baby steps; your baby steps, properly adhered to, will get you where you want, when you want. You can almost feel the success!

You’re overcome with joy after putting in one hour out of your three for the day. There’s a spring in your step as you walk out of your room, ready to face the outside world with a smile on your face.

It’s been thirty minutes, breakfast tasted good, you’re taking a little break, roaming through social media for a while shouldn’t hurt, afterall you put in an entire hour, you have just two hours left, there’s enough hours left in the day to put two of them aside, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, right? No reason for Jack to be a dull boy, right? Right?!!!

It’s been two hours, in your defense, you washed a multitude of plates for some thirty-five minutes and then you helped run some errands which lasted for close to thirty minutes so you’re resting, because life is short and everyone needs rest so you’re going to view some memes and laugh off the steam.

It’s been five hours but in your defense, you had to make lunch, wash some clothes, iron them and wash the plates, again! You’re emotionally and physically drained, wondering why there’s so much to be done. You can’t work in such a condition cause your brain isn’t cooperating. Life shouldn’t be that difficult, everyone deserves to be happy and so do you. A nap should do.

It’s evening, you overslept and you’re starving, you should really stick to your plan and put in your pending two hours but then, your mind isn’t awake yet so you’d see if that is something food could fix. Glancing at your phone, you see a chat from one of your friends, you know better than to respond to that chat seeing as the day is almost over and you have work to do but you ignore the warning bells in your head.

Feels like thirty minutes but you’ve spent four times the exact time needed to complete your work for the day. No need crying over spilt milk, it’s too late now, “Why in the world did I allocate so much time to my work on the first day?” you questioned, excusing yourself nicely.

And as you lay quietly on the bed about to sleep, again, you assured yourself the next day would be better but you knew deep down that that was highly unlikely. Why? Because you’re a lazy kid with big dreams.

Dear lazy kid,

You’re not alone, take this from someone who’s been working on her blog
for close to four months now. Not to worry, I think I just might have the solution to our problems!

Once, many years ago, a close friend and a superior in the cohort of lazy kids with big dreams spilled some words of wisdom when I questioned how she survived as a lazy kid. She simply said, “You just have to be very fast.” These words made absolutely no sense to me then but now, reflecting on those words, they make so much sense!

My mum always reiterated this quote, “the big may not always eat the small but the fast will always eat the slow”. This simply means my friend was right! It’s alright to be a lazy kid, just make sure you’re the fastest!

There’s something about being the fastest, you get a head-start; and as a lazy kid, trust me, you need all the head-starts you can get.

If everyone is waiting till graduation to put together their business plan, be the fastest to put yours together by starting in junior secondary school!

If everyone is waiting till they’re older to make music, begin to make yours as soon as you discover your passion for it!

If everyone is waiting till they have a better phone to start their vlog, start putting your ideas down while waiting for a phone for your vlog!

Because when it’s time for graduation or when everyone is older or when you finally get a better phone, you just might be too lazy to follow through with your plans.

Start early, give yourself months and years worth of head-starts and the world might choose not to believe that you’re a lazy kid after all!

Disclaimer: In your bid to be the fastest, remember to be the best too! Nobody wants to be associated with a fast mediocre.
